I would also prefer a DIY TTL driven keyboard maybe in a Gigatron wooden case ;-). At first I would use the H/VSYNC poll mechanism like the Famicom controller. Yes, my Gigatron is up and running with the same number of sockets. ;)

I chose sockets with integrated bypass caps to save some time.
