Companies like JLCPCB are not very expensive for PCBs, but the PCBs are still a large investment if you want to do a small batch.

Is SMD cheaper? Then that might indeed be an option. It will make it harder to solder though, or you'd have to have the PCB supplier do it for you, which takes away from the whole learning experience (but that might be a choice).
