Fitting a screen inside the wooden box

Post by frabuk »

Hello,

I am thinking about getting a cheap 10`' - 11`` VGA screen. My idea is to pry the back off and get an transparent lcd. Then putting that screen inside the box and mounting it to the wall. Sort of a retro picture frame where you can see trough the display onto the PCB. Do the 25.2 cm x 17.6 cm x 3.0 cm dimensons refer to the PCB with all its components or are these the dimensions of the wooden box?

What kind of screen would neatly fit into the box? I think the depth of the box could be easily increased by sandwiching a wooden or 3d printen bezel between the top and the bottom. So I am especially interested in widht and height of the wooden box.

Also if anyone has tips with regards to tearing down cheap VGA displays. That would be great.

Thank you!

25.2 cm x 17.6 cm x 3.0 cm
Those are the outside measures of the box. The PCB is 9.25 inch x 6.25 inch. Sorry for the imperial units, but I know those by heart...

It’s probably too expensive but if OLED screens would be perfect for this. They don’t need a back light, the pixels that are not turned on are mostly clear (depending one screen).

Heck you could even use one of the creators demos and descriptions of operation. Then have boxes outline the appropriate circuits being discussed.

I got an lcd of ebay. Unfortantely the display was damaged in shipping. Other than that, the display was quite easyly dismantled and worked fine. The backlight is a led strip.

The gecko in the picture is underneath the display. I‘m getting confident ;-)

This will take me while. I‘m thinking of mounting the gigatron to the wall and have it render the mandelbrot set.

If anyone has suggestions for moutning the lcd inside the box, they are welcome. I‘m thinking about just gluing it onto the plexi glas. Maybe the driver board can be mounted on the back of the box. The ribbon cable should fit inbetween the pcb and the box and could come out of the back.

Cheers and stay healthy!

Nice design. You got yourself a gigatron laptop computer. Awesome! This looks pretty much like the same lcd i got, prior to taking it apart.

Thank you for the pictures!

Looks very nice.

What LCD panel did you get?

Did it come with a VGA interface, or did you have to integrate that?
